American Disabilities Act Basics

The American with Disabilities Act is a comprehensive law created by the Federal Government in 1990 to help all people have complete access to the areas they need. These areas include businesses that serve the public with services or products, and other locations classified by the ADA as “places of public accommodation.” The ADA Compliance Team has intimate knowledge of every aspect of the act, including the critical portions of the law that require many types of businesses to comply with its standards. Before you begin your next construction project or renovation initiative, be sure to contact ADA Compliance Team to ensure your work is fully compliant with ADA standards.

Title I

The first portion of the ADA is designed to protect those with disabilities against improprieties in employment. Any employer with 15 or more employees is required to not discriminate against any current or potential employees for any opportunities based on disability. This requires employers to make reasonable arrangements to accommodate employees with disabilities. The ADA Compliance Team can help you make these adjustments or arrangements to comply with Title I.

Title II

Title II prohibits any local, state, or federal government entities from discriminating or denying access to any persons based on disability. All publicly owned and operated facilities must follow ADA standards for access to both physical locations and programs. Title II also requires all public transportation be accessible by those with disabilities.

Title III

This provision applies to any publicly accessible buildings or businesses; Title III affects all stores, restaurants, medical facilities, and educational facilities, among others. All pre-existing buildings, as well as all new construction projects, must be designed and built to these standards. ADA Compliance Team can help you meet the standards for any new construction, addition, or remodel.
